Matthew Kumin, EsqMr. Kumin is a long-time practitioner of civil rights law in both state and federal courts and has advised patients, caregivers, patients’ cooperatives, govern-mental agencies, and legislative bodies regarding medical cannabis issues since 1996. He was lead counsel in the first United States Tax Court case that addressed the federal income taxation of medical cannabis. CHAMP v. Com’r of the
IRS, 128 T.C. No. 14 (May, 2007). He is a former President of the California Association of Cooperatives, and has formed over 50 patient cooperatives statewide. He is currently suing Sonoma County and the City of Vallejo on behalf of disabled patients who have been denied access to medical cannabis. Matt also consults with attorneys in California and Colorado regarding equal protection for patients. He speaks nationally on various legal issues concerning medical cannabis, including defending against federal trafficking charges under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Mr. Kumin has also taught classes at several Bay Area law schools, including Santa Clara University, Hastings and Golden Gate University.
